GOING FOR IT: OMBRE HAIR. AGAIN.

12.16.2011

My hair was getting to that perfectly fine but completely boring place again the other day. And I couldn't resist, because I never can.

Believe it or not, I'm actually trying to grow out my natural hair color. So, my one rule for myself these days is that as long as I don't touch the roots, anything is fair game. I attempted the ombre look a couple of months ago, and I loved it, but it didn't take long before it turned brassy and I had to use a toner to neutralize everything. Unfortunately, I chose a toner that was too dark, and lost all of the ombre. So.. I'm bringing it back.

Here is my hair in all it's glory, after being up in a ponytail all day.. and see my lovely natural roots? I actually like them, a little mousy, but shiny and a little translucent.. which I'm not used to.

I should say that I don't recommend this method. At all. To anyone. Especially if you aren't used to coloring your hair and don't know how your tresses will react... But this is how I did it.

step 1. mix your highlighting powder. typically I just use 20 volume developer, but this time I bumped it up to 30 (whoa). I used two of those individual packets and went to town.

step 2. separate your hair into manageable sections and apply your bleach mixture to the bottom third of your hair.. squish it in there. USE GLOVES. I didn't. I may or may not have burned some of my skin from the chemical exposure.

step 3. after you've covered the bottom third of your whole head, go back and cover up two thirds of the way. try to blend it in, smush it around.. whatever. (again, not recommended)

step 4. wait for 20-30 minutes after you complete step 3.

step 5. rinse out the highlighting powder and apply a toner of your choice. I chose a super light natural blonde (10N). start at the ends and work your way up. let that sit for 10-15 minutes.

step 6. rinse it out. wash your hair. CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION CONDITION.

step 7. that's it.. cross your fingers and dry and style your hair as normal.

At the end of the day, I'm happy with it. It's STILL not as dramatic as I was hoping for, and.. there are a lot of splotchy areas. oops. Luckily, my hair is curly and it hides almost all of the not so pleasant areas.. but, I will need to even things out at some point. One more round of self-inflicted highlights next week perhaps, and then I'll plan on getting a complete overhaul sometime early next year.. you know, wedding prep and all.

For those that don't know, my hair has been several colors over the course of the last 8 months.. So much so, that the first question my aunt asked me when she found out I was engaged was "we're dying to know. what color will your hair be for the wedding??"

...haha, I still don't know :) give me a few months.
